History of Tourmaline:

    • Empress Dowager Cixi of China was exceptionally fond of pink and red tourmaline, importing huge quantities from San Diego, California, in the early 1900s for carvings, snuff bottles, and jewelry
    • Dutch traders in the 18th century brought tourmaline from Sri Lanka and named it aschentrekker (ash-puller). They noticed its pyroelectric properties when heated, it develops a charge that attracts ash.
